I am a holder of a PhD, yet I was not happy at school: I was only saved in education by a marvellous teacher.
I went from wanting to leave school at 16 to getting 8 A* and an A at GCSE, full marks in most modules of AS and A2 English, History, Politics, and AS Economics and Latin, a First in an undergraduate degree in English Literature and Language at King's College London, and a Distinction in an MA in History and English.
The turning point was finding a teacher who believed in my abilities. I hold season tickets at Arsenal, have played rugby for 10 years (and have been on the committee for three), and currently train young event horses near Reading.
