About Michael

I have taught for 350+ hours with dozens of students, ranging between 9 and 18 years old. I have worked within schools, independently and on behalf of Local Education Authorities. Some of my students have gone on to win scholarships, entrance to grammar schools or seen their average grade improve by 20% or more. ---------- SPECIALITIES ------------ I specialise in critical thinking, creative self expression and sentence structure. Here is a break down of my strategies. EXPRESSION - I use highly original, tailored exercises to help students unlock their personality on the page. No more bland, monosyllabic sentences! Without the ability to think honestly, it is very difficult to write extended essays, stories or even hold conversation. My exercises deal with self-censorship, honesty and the more nuanced aspects of self expression. DIVERGENT THINKING - I teach a creative method of thinking, known as "divergent thinking", helping students realise there are many ways to solve a problem. This is a vital skill for advanced level subjects such as English and one which many students lack. SPELLING - I have many techniques and resources to massively increase vocabulary, provide motivation and make sure advanced words are spelt correctly, understood and taken into the student's personality. GRAMMAR - I am confident teaching all the tenses, correct use of commas and sophisticated clause use. Without a developed understanding of subordinate clauses and sentence rhythm, it is very difficult to get across complex ideas to a reader. COMPREHENSION - I have an effective and personal technique for mastering "P.E.E." and comprehension exercises, at all levels. This includes relatively simple exercises such as embedded quotations, as well as the ultimate challenge - offering analysis of difficult unseen texts. I am familiar with most GCSE and A-Level authors, including Shakespeare, Dickens and Steinbeck, and enjoy introducing students to a wide range of contemporary literature in order to foster interest in the written word. HISTORY: I have a BA in History and can cover any period to degree level, including Slavery, World War I & II and the Industrial Revolution. ------------------------------------------- My rate is competitive, and I have many references detailing my success with students. I have a full DBS disclosure. I am a popular and respected tutor, with a great rapport and ability to get on with my students. I am also a professional writer for the stage, born in London, and often use creative exercises in my lessons to make sure they're fun. Areas of London I travel to include: Dalston, Leyton, Whitechapel and Islington. I am also very confident teaching remotely via Skype, which is just as effective as a face to face lesson.
