Richard has over two years experience in tutoring in-person and is now expanding into on-line tutoring. Richard has a double BEng/BCom from Birmingham University and an MSc in Environmental Economics from UCL. Richard has two months experience as a trainee class-room maths teacher in one of the top twenty public schools in the UK. Each student is an individual & will have their own strengths, interests and confidence in the subject; therefore I tailor each lesson to the specific student and their circumstances.Occasionally, where a student has been absent, or is very uncertain on a topic, it may be beneficial to provide a more structured ‘traditional’ lesson.
In my experience however, it is more common for maths tutees to benefit from a less formal approach, which: - Seeks to identify gaps in the student’s knowledge and then address them, rather than starting each topic from scratch. - Focuses on enabling the student to solve problems of gradually increasing difficulty themselves, helping to build confidence (usually it is the student’s confidence, rather than their ability which is holding them back). - Uses practical examples, based on the student’s interest wherever possible; - Always builds towards answering past paper questions; for practice and to build confidence. - Provides suggestions for activities to be undertaken outside of tutoring hours to develop the students skills & knowledge; this can include traditional ‘homework’, but more commonly activities which are fun to do!
