About Ben

I'm a London musician and private tutor with a background in jazz and classical music, composition, saxophone, piano, bassoon, music technology, recording, audio engineering, maths and sciences. Qualified teacher status, 3 years of classroom experience and a further 3 years of private tuition experience, teaching Maths from 11+ to A-level, Music Theory, Saxophone, Piano and Bassoon lessons to pupils of all ages. I can also offer support with Sciences up to GCSE and most subjects in preparation for 11+ and 13+ or specific school entry exams, particularly Maths, Sciences, English, French and Latin. I have a number of longterm pupils, with some of whom I have been working for over 3 years either as instrumental pupils or for ongoing academic support, particularly in Maths. I have also had many pupils with short-term targets, whom I have helped pass specific exams such as Music Theory, IGCSEs, A-levels and entrance into particular schools.

My teaching style stems primarily from my enthusiasm for the subject and learning in general and finding fun ways to interpret and solve problems. I take a very relaxed, optimistic and individual approach to work and life in general but care about the details and the one area in which I can be quite strict is when it comes to accuracy.

Outside of working as a musician and tutor, I follow my interests in science and languages, visit the cinema regularly, am teaching myself Hindi alongside improving my Italian, have a season ticket at QPR and participate in occasional charity walks. I'm always barefoot, partly for medical reasons as well as personal preference, which may be taken as a measure of my ability to make my way in the world on my own terms supported by my academic and musical ability, as well as my relaxed nature and the confidence to stand by my own choices in a positive way.

Availability: Weekday daytime. Weekday evenings (as of November 2017 Mondays and Fridays are available) Sunday mornings. I can teach at home for a £5 hourly discount or travel to you for the advertised hourly rate. I will travel long distances to teach but it must he a journey I can make entirely on public transport as I do not drive for medical reasons, and there would be a minimum lesson length of 2 hours.

Willing to travel: 5 miles

Tutoring Experience:

Following graduation with a degree in Music and Sound Recording - I trained and qualified as a secondary school classroom teacher in Inner London. I spent three years teaching in the classroom in schools in East London, Cambridgeshire and Kuwait before leaving full time classroom teaching to allow myself a greater control over the balance between my music and teaching work. As of 2010 I am now a free lance musician and private tutor, teaching Maths as well as Music lessons and other subjects at lower levels.
