The Eleven Plus Process - The Costs
Parents serious about Eleven Plus success take the time to sit down and think about the costs involved.
If successful there is a lot of money to be saved in the long run.
The formula that I have personally used to get good results involved two sessions a week each of two hours duration.
The first session has involved the teaching of English and Mathematics.
Each subject was taught for an hour.
This was usually taught on a suitable weekday evening.
The second session was used to teach Non-Verbal Reasoning (Numerical Reasoning) and Verbal Reasoning.
Each subject was taught for an hour.
This was usually taught on the weekend.
When looking at the actual cost you can easily expect to pay £50 for each two hour session.
This works out at a minimum of £100 per week.
Many parents understandably find this amount of money quite alarming.
Over a 12 week period this amounts to £1200 a term for three terms.
This is at least £3600 per academic year.
The process needs to begin from at least Year 4 through to the end of Year 5.
This is £7200.
In terms of total overall costs the two year process can cost from £7000 to £10,000.
These are minimal estimates based on finding a good Tutor willing to be paid £50 per two hour session twice a week over a period of two academic years.
Many Tutors will charge more.
Many Tutors will only specialise in a particular Discipline like English or Mathematics.
I cannot emphasise enough the fact that to be adequately prepared for Eleven Plus Examinations a student needs to diligently master all five subject areas as outlined in "Eleven Plus Advice - The Basics".
If a student is going to a State School the parents have no school fees to pay.
Often these private school fees are "eye wateringly expensive" to say the least !
Private school fees are very often in the region of at least £5000 to £6000 per term.
This amounts to between £15,000 to £20,000 per academic year.
If successful in securing a place at a good Grammar School the educational opportunities afforded to the student are equivalent if not substantially better than at many private fee paying schools.
At least £20,000 is saved every year a student is there.
This is £100,000 worth of school fees saved from Year 7 to Year 11.
An additional £40,000 is saved if the student is allowed to stay on to do A Levels.
For the sake of investing £7000 to £10,000, a parent can potentially save themselves £140,000 in the long run.
Money is never talked about openly.
It is seen as a vulgar thing to do.
Yet it is precisely money that drives the Eleven Plus Tutoring business market !
