Learning alternatives and students potential

Over the years, the research on the different teaching approaches, methods and possible activities to be used in class has provided teachers with almost endless possibilities of teaching English as a Second Language to students of all ages and backgrounds, including children and adults.

Your focus as a teacher might be on grammar, on producing correct sentence structure, or on oral repetition. Or, as a more modern teacher, you might be concentrated in providing very good lessons based on communication activities. Whatever approach you use, every content will be useful in building the consciousness of students as regards the production and the use of what is a new language to them.

Indeed, today teaching English in effective ways is such a primary concern almost all over the modern world that, as a teacher, you will have a number of alternatives for every course and even every lesson you will work on.

But this richness of possible teaching materials can also be a great stimulus for a teacher who always wants to meet the educational needs of his/her individual students.

When you stimulate the curiosity of your students or their interests; when you help and support them in building up their self-confidence; when you are open to communicate with them and face whatever problem that might arise during the learning process, you are on the good way to provide positive learning experiences to your students. As a consequence, personal satisfaction for both parties might be a predictable outcome.

Of course, not all the learning experiences are positives ones, even when all possible efforts have been made by both the teacher and the students. But, on the other hand, one might be surprised by the learning potentials that even students with some difficulties can show when they are stimulated in the right way.

Students lacking in self-confidence might make visible progresses over a reasonable period of time; others who have not shown a particular interest in the subject before might discover that it is a pleasant area of study. After some help, students with some degree of learning difficulties, for example reading or memorizing problems, might finally find out that they are able to learn, too, more or less as any other student.

As a teacher, it is always very rewarding to see that your efforts can have good visible results in other people’s lives.
